Curable Cirrhosis?
High levels of alcohol consumption, nutritional deprivation, and infections like hepatitis can lead to the formation of scar tissue in the liver, a process known as fibrosis. Severe, chronic scarring and continued loss of functional liver cells is characterized as cirrhosis, a disease that leads to the progressive loss of liver function. Until now, doctors treated the condition by addressing the causes, but they may soon be able to halt the cirrhosis itself. Researchers were able to stop the formation of new scar tissue in mice with severe cirrhosis by administering a chemical that blocks RSK, a protein released by the body during the healing process.
