Eating Cured Meats Could Hurt Your Lungs
A US new study found a link between frequent consumption of cured meats and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which is characterized by swelling of the airways. Other studies, mostly on animals, have shown a link between nitrite consumption and reduced lung function. Nitrites are added to cured meat as preservative, color, or anti-bacterial agents.
