Pickled Herring Key to Long Life?
Born in 1890 weighing just 3.5 lbs, her parents never expected her to live past infancy, but Hendrikje van Andel-Schipper beat the odds and lived to be 115. Even in death, the Dutch supercentenarian continues to amaze scientists. In 1972, the then 82 year old offered to donate her body to science; 33 years later, she made good on her offer. A post-mortem analysis of her brain found few signs of the degenerative conditions associated with declining mental ability in old age. This finding is consistent with the results of cognitive tests she underwent a few years before her death, tests on which she performed better than the average 60- to 75-year-old.
